Head Case

I love social psychology experiments, and this is one of the many really good ones. What a mixed bag of neuroses us herd animals are!

Enjoy.

  1. This looks as if it was filmed early in the 1960s.
I wonder if it would that still work now?

  2. Intersting - you're right, its a 60s Candid Camera stunt, illustrating something called Social Norms - the same thing that is demonstrated in the Stanford Prison experiment where "guards" start exhibiting outrageous behaviour to fit in with their given role. I'm reading a book called "Influence: Science and Practice" which has a whole chapter dedicated to this. For example, if you fall down in the street clutching your chest and shout for help, it may take a while before anyone comes because we're all too busy looking around to see if anyone else will help. If you fall down in the street clutching your chest and shout "Hey, you in the blue shirt, help me!" you'll get help straight away as there is no-one else for the blue shirt to Norm against (the author ran both of these experiments).
